One of the blogs plugged into my RSS Reader is Fertility Matters, a blog by Kate Brian, author of The Complete Guide to Female Fertility and The Complete Guide to IVF. Kate is also Infertility Network UK regional organiser for London and the South East.
Kate just blogged about a new support group that will start up in the next few months in Central London for Asian men and women undergoing fertility treatment. I was really, really pleased to see this as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is the leading cause of infertility in women, and South Asian women are significantly more likely to have PCOS than any other ethnic group. There are many cultural considerations that may not be understood by other infertility sufferers and that may make it harder for South Asian women to open up in a group setting and talk her situation.
Raising awareness of PCOS amongst the South Asian community and equally as importantly of the prevalence of PCOS on this ethnic group to the medical community is something we are very keen to do. If you’re a woman of Asian origin, we would love to hear your thoughts on what you think Verity can do to help achieve this.
