Research request: Is your diagnosis impacting your relationship with food?

The below blog post has been written by the research team, and details of how to participate in the research can be found at the bottom of this post. Verity have sighted the ethics approval granted for the recruitment of this study. Please note that the condition previously known as PCOS is now referred to as PMOS; some researchers and clinicians may still use the term PCOS during this transition period.

Introduction

We’re running a new research study exploring how long‑term health conditions, including PCOS, may influence body image and eating‑related thoughts. This work is important because many people with PCOS experience changes in weight, appearance, and wellbeing that are often misunderstood or overlooked. The study is designed for people aged 16+ living in the UK who have PCOS, lipedema, or hypothyroidism.

About the Study

This research aims to understand how appearance concerns, illness duration, and type of health condition relate to eating behaviours. The project is being carried out as part of an MSc in Clinical Psychology at the University of Bath, with full ethical approval to ensure the study is safe, respectful, and confidential. By gathering people’s experiences, we hope to build a clearer picture that can support better awareness, treatment, and psychological support for those living with PCOS and similar conditions.

What’s Involved?

  • Completing a short online questionnaire
  • Estimated time: around 10 minutes
  • All questions are anonymous and focus on your experiences, feelings about appearance, and eating‑related thoughts and behaviours

Who Can Take Part?

You are eligible if you:

  • Are 16 years or older
  • Live in the UK
  • Have PCOS, lipedema, or hypothyroidism
  • Do not have any other chronic health conditions

Why Take Part?

Your experiences can help improve understanding of how PCOS and similar conditions affect body image, wellbeing, and everyday life. By taking part, you’ll be contributing to research that aims to inform better support, awareness, and healthcare for people living with these conditions. Every response helps build a more accurate and compassionate picture. After completing the survey, you will have the opportunity to enter a prize draw for a chance to win one of four £25 shopping vouchers.
